Signed Antique Japanese Miniature Mask Netsuke
A beautiful piece of Japanese social history, this miniature "Okame" mask is a traditional bringer of happiness and good fortune. In Japanese folklore, Okame is portrayed with the cheerful, rounded features seen here. This netsuke was once a functional part of a gentleman’s attire, acting as a decorative toggle to secure items to a kimono sash.
Despite its diminutive size, the carver has captured a wealth of personality in Okame’s smile. The reverse is hand-signed with the artist’s mark, making this an excellent piece for a serious collector of Japanese art. The material has developed a warm, smooth patina through years of handling, which only adds to the character of the carving.
It measures 3cm x 2.5cm.
